One of the remote wonders of the Suches area is known simply as 'the swinging bridge.' It is a 265 foot long suspension foot bridge, the longest one east of the Mississippi. It was built to allow hikers on the Benton MacKaye trail to easily cross the rushing Toccoa River. (Extra points if you know who Benton MacKaye was without looking it up!) The bridge really does gently swing and sway underfoot as you cross it.
How to get there: take Georgia highway 60 North from Dahlonega through Suches, and keep going. After entering Fannin County, go another 5.8 miles. Take the dirt road to the left that has the trail marker by it. It's a rough 3.1 mile dirt road, so a four-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance is recommended. At the end of the road, follow the trail about one-third of a mile. After you've enjoyed your bridge adventure, try and answer this: How in the world were they able to build it? |
